Kelly Slater takes 3rd Annual Sean and Skippy Slater Skin Cancer Foundation Invitational

Quiksilver and Kelly Slater had a good day in Cocoa Beach Florida today. Kelly came home to see family and friends and support his brothers, Sean and Skippy, by surfing in the 3rd Annual Sean and Skippy Slater Skin Cancer Foundation Invitational. The 9 x ASP World Surfing Champ was looking sharp in the small surf, lively, and loose as ever! Kelly came up against a number of young bucks that wanted a piece of the champ. They got nothing! Kelly was riding a little mini biscuit tri-fin and zinging throughout the entire event, which started on Friday. A thousand or so spectators came out for the final day. Kelly, with amazing composure, was signing autographs for his fans before and after his heats. In the final, Kelly came up against Blake Jones and Kyle Garson (both from Melbourne Beach, Florida). It was a solid final; both Blake and Kyle were on point surfing solid, changing places, and leading at various times. Kelly with a solid 7.8 on the board needed one more score. Of course, inside the three minute mark, Kelly takes off on the last wave of a set, lunges through a foamy section, lays out his big square arcing turn, runs for speed and lays out a mean hooking gaff nose stab to layback with spray chunks flying everywhere(photo below). You know the rest of the story; he pulled it cleanly, good for an 8.8. Lots of coverage on the event, and in Florida Today. Slater Takes Top Honors at Skin Cancer Invitational in Florida
