The Quiksilver ISA World Junior Surfing Championship Brings Together Top Junior Competitors in Punta

Punta Hermosa, Peru (May 20, 2011) - The Quiksilver ISA World Junior Surfing Championship will be held from May 21 - 29 on the idyllic waves of Caballeros and Señoritas in Punta Hermosa, Peru. This "Olympic Style" event hosts over 250 male and female competitors, divided into teams from 27 countries. The under-18 contingent of athletes will compete for medals, trophies and the honor of representing their nations. The three divisions of competitors surf to win gold, silver, bronze and copper medals and the trophies are awarded to the countries that achieve the highest points total, taking all team members performances into consideration. "Quiksilver has always realized the importance of supporting the youngest generation of surfers," said Quiksilver CEO Bob McKnight. "These junior competitors are the future of the sport and getting them out here and competing on a global level helps them foster their love for surfing. We've always had a great partnership with the ISA and hosting the event in Peru this year has added an exciting dynamic to the event." Started in 2003 in Durban, South Africa, The Quiksilver ISA World Junior Surfing Championship is an annual event hosting three separate divisions of junior competitors (Under-18 Boys, Under-18 Girls, and Under-16 Boys).  The concept for a global junior-level competition was originally conceived by the ISA in 1980, when surfing legend Tom Curren became the first ISA Junior Champion. The ISA selected Peru as the host nation of the event in 2011 due to the country's fervent commitment to a better surfing future. The Peruvian Surfing Association, which is the country's well-structured national governing body for surfing, are excellent hosts to these junior competitors who will showcase their talent against a Peruvian coastline packed with historically consistent waves. Past ISA World Junior Surfing Championship gold medalists include: Stephanie Gilmore, Matt Banting, Sally Fitzgibbons and Jordy Smith. The 2011 Quiksilver ISA World Junior Surfing Championship will be webcast live at www.isawjsc.com.
