Kelly Slater Given Key to Huntington Beach

Ten-time world champ celebrated in Surf City By: Joe Turpel Main Street in downtown Huntington Beach was completely blocked off Tuesday night. The street that splits two of the biggest surf shops in the world had a stage set where cars should've been. The traffic still existed -- hundreds of people battling for front and center positioning, as they anticipated the arrival of ten-time World Champion Kelly Slater. Kelly showed up about ten minutes late and looked really surprised. "Did they close the street for me?" Kelly questioned the "Ten" chanting audience. The Mayor of the City of Huntington Beach, Joe Carchio, was honored to present Kelly Slater with this special key. "We don't give out a lot of keys," Mayor Carchio said, "and when we give it to someone like Kelly Slater it really means so much." The first ASP World Champion, Peter Townend, opened up the ceremony and sat back with Quiksilver CEO Bob McKnight as Kelly reflected on his relationships with not only the waves in HB, but with the people as well. He thought of the fond memories he had over at Chuck Dent's shop, to eating at Jan's surf shop, to winning a NSSA National title, to surfing against and getting smoked by his hero Tom Curren at the Katin event when he was 13. Mayor Carchio adds, "He is the guy that made Huntington Beach Surf City, USA. This is a small token of appreciation for all he is has done for us over the last 30 years."
